Comment raconter ce qui est indicible, montrer ce qui n'est pas regardable ? Le pari est risqué, mais dans LITTLE PALESTINE, JOURNAL D'UN SIÈGE les intentions sont précises, la réalité est saisissante. Le cinéaste documente de près de nombreuses situations, de la plus banale à la plus poignante, et sa voix douce parsème le récit comme une réponse à un autre hors champ, celui de la guerre en Syrie. Ce texte, véritable réflexion poétique, donne à la fois une distance et une autre signification aux images.
Filmées ou collectées, elles témoignent d'un mini cosmos, une communauté qui continue de faire monde même dans le magma absurde de la guerre. Un siège qui raconte tous les sièges, dans une guerre qui est toutes les guerres – bien qu'elle soit filmée en creux, elle est là tout autour, elle dévore tout, classes sociales et générations confondues. Pourtant l'humain persiste : on parle, on chante, on danse, on papote avec une petite fille désabusée, on descend un piano d'un appartement éventré pour improviser une chanson... À Yarmouk, nous sommes plongés dans le réel du siège, dans un quotidien où rien n'a d'importance, où les obus tombent et les immeubles s'écroulent, mais où la vie continue, désespérément, avec vigueur.
How can one talk about what is unspeakable? Or show what cannot be seen? Attempting to do that is a very risky bet, but in the movie LITTLE PALESTINE, DIARY OF A SIEGE, the filmmaker's intentions are clear and the viewers feel like they are literally transported into another reality. The camera records many situations that range from the ordinary to the extremely moving, and the filmmaker's voice can be heard from time to time, like a response to what is left off screen: the war in Syria. His discourse, which is both analytical and poetic, sometimes seems to have no direct connection to what we see on the screen, but it also gives it another meaning.
These images, that the filmmaker has filmed himself or that he collected from other sources, all testify of the existence of a micro cosmos, a community of people who keep living their lives together even when the war is absurdly raging around them. The siege of Yarmouk tells us something about all sieges, that war tells us something about all wars. And even though it stays off screen, the war is always present in the movie and it devours everything and everyone, regardless of their age or their social class. And yet, humanity resists: people talk, sing, dance, chat with a disillusioned little girl, bring down a piano from an apartment that has been bombed to improvise a song... Watching LITTLE PALESTINE, DIARY OF A SIEGE, we get to live the siege of Yarmouk from the inside. We share the daily life of its protagonists: a life in which nothing really matters, in which bombshells are dropped and buildings collapse. But in Yarmouk life goes on: desperately and vigorously.
