On reconnaît une ville contemporaine japonaise. Un homme, en costume trois-pièces, longe une rivière, emprunte un pont, s'arrête pour appeler sur un coup de tête son bureau et annonce qu'il va s'absenter. Le plan suivant, on le retrouve au comptoir d'une cantine où, la veille, on l'avait vu partir sans payer. À la mi-chemin de sa vie, quelque chose se dérègle étrangement dans le quotidien de ce proviseur adjoint de lycée, comme s'il réalisait qu'il évolue à tâtons dans un monde de faux-semblants : avec sa fille, ou sa compagne, la communication semble difficile ; au travail, il a l'impression d'être réduit à des tâches médiocres. Par petites touches, une révolte sourde s'empare de lui, comme si libérer sa parole devenait une nécessité absolue. Maintenant que son vieux père mutique est plongé dans un silence profond, il s'autorise à s'exprimer auprès de lui avec une sincérité radicale. Libéré aussi du carcan de la relation maître / élève, le voilà secoué par le franc-parler inattendu d'une ex-lycéenne. Tiraillé entre deux générations, comme suspendu entre le monde des vivants et celui des mourants, Dreaming in Between, avec toute son épure et son sens de la temporalité et des silences, réveille en nous le souvenir du cinéma d'Ozu.

What we see is a contemporary Japanese city. A man dressed in a three-piece suit walks along a river, crosses a bridge, and then, on a whim, stops to call his office and tell them he will miss work the following day. In the next shot, he is sitting at the counter of a canteen which, the day before, we saw him leave without paying. Now that he is a middle-aged man, something is starting to go awry in the life of this high school vice principal. As if he were realizing that he is fumbling around in a world of make-believe. Communicating with his daughter and his partner seems difficult. At work he feels like he is only given menial tasks. Little by little, a sense of revolt silently takes hold of him. As if speaking out was becoming for him an absolute necessity. Now that his elderly father has gone completely mute, the protagonist allows himself to talk to him with radical sincerity, to open up. Freed from the constraints of the teacher-student relationship, he gets shaken by one of his former high schoolers' unexpected straightforwardness. Dreaming in between is torn between two generations, as if hanging between the world of the living and that of the dying. Its pared-down beauty, its silences as well as its sense of temporality strongly remind us of Ozu's cinema.
