Yamabuki is the name of a small shrub whose flowers are of a bright and elegant yellow. It grows in the shadow, in the rocky soil of Japanese mountains. Yamabuki is also the name of a gold coin which was used to bribe people in ancient Japan. Finally, Yamabuki is the name of a silent and rebellious young girl, the protagonist of Juichiro Yamasaki's film.

Following the example of this heterogeneous homonymy, the filmmaker combines, with a sort of rough delicacy, elements which seem to have no connection with one another. Much like a river flowing down from a mountain which gets transformed by converging with other rivers on its bumpy ride or infiltrates the earth to give birth to plants, the narrative of the movie produces in its creases stories and characters that connect only thanks to (seemingly random) strokes of fate. Its movements make us stare at the depth of the human soul and it - delicately, without ever judging anyone - sheds a light on what unites us (or separates us) : family, grief, love, having too much money or not enough, commitment, guilt, cowardice, exploitation, identity…

The film's material is a poetic material. The gorgeous grain of the 16 mm movie print makes us watch the film as if through a veil which had abolished time. Light and darkness, as well as plants and stones, are set against one another and thus reveal the rough edges of a territory and of a society. Yamabuki is an act of cinematographic resistance against the sound and the fury of the world. And, just like the flower, it doesn't need the sun to shine bright.
