Se frayant un chemin entre les champs minés, Maciek Hamela nous embarque comme passager de sa voiture fuyant l'Ukraine au milieu de l'avancée russe. La guerre demeure hors champ. Et pourtant nous la voyons se refléter sur le visage des enfants, des femmes et des personnes âgées qu'il aide à rejoindre la Pologne. Ce n'est qu'en quittant la guerre, en lui tournant le dos, que ces personnes commencent à réaliser l'ampleur de ce qui s'est passé. Derrière - le monde détruit, dont les réfugiés ont tenté de sauver les débris : des chats, quelques vêtements, un fer à repasser... Devant - la séparation des maris, des fils, des pères qui sont restés pour défendre leur pays. La voiture du réalisateur est à la fois la scène et le bateau, un espace intime pour partager en toute sincérité les inquiétudes, les rêves et l'espoir.  

En pointant sa caméra vers le siège arrière, le cinéaste pose sur eux un regard plein de respect et de tendresse, toujours dans la bonne distance, et parvient ainsi à mêler son geste humanitaire d'un geste cinématographique fort. Le film donne à voir une communauté de destin dans laquelle on reconnaît et retrouve notre humanité.

As he makes his way through minefields out of Ukraine and tries to outrun the Russian army, Maciek Hamela offers us a seat in his car. The war itself remains off screen. And yet we can see its reflection on the faces of the children, the women and the elderly people that he helps get to Poland. It is only by leaving the war, by turning their back on it, that these people start to grasp the magnitude of what has happened. Behind them is a ravaged world from which the refugees have tried to save fragments - a few clothes, an iron, some cats… In front of them, what awaits them is being separated from their husbands, sons and fathers who stayed in Ukraine to defend their country. The filmmaker's car is both a boat and a stage. It is an intimate space where people can, without holding back, share their concerns, dreams and hopes.  

By choosing to point his camera at the backseat of his car, Hamela looks at these people with respect and tenderness. He always keeps the right distance with his passengers and thus succeeds in creating something which is at the same time a humanitarian gesture and a powerful piece of cinema. His movie shows a community of destiny in which all of us can find and recognize our own humanity.
