Les pieds plantés dans le sable, la tête droite et le regard rieur, Aya proclame qu'elle ne partira jamais. Pourtant la presqu'île de Côte d'Ivoire où elle vit avec sa mère et son petit frère est peu à peu rongée par l'océan, poussant ses habitants à migrer vers la capitale. 

Avec sa magnifique photographie et son montage sensoriel, cette fiction qui emprunte largement au documentaire nous fait sentir le sable, le sel et la présence entêtante de la mer dans laquelle se fondent rêve et réalité, visible et invisible. Mais la grande force de la mise en scène est de nous river au pas insouciant de son héroïne, à son entêtement joyeux, à son reste d'enfance terriblement vivant et solaire, pour parcourir avec elle ce territoire en train de disparaître. De nuit, elle l'explore comme en songe, dans un clair-obscur hanté par les fantômes. Car si le film nous livre la chronique d'une vie simple et heureuse, il fait aussi le récit d'un arrachement qui nous rappelle que tout exil commence par un sacrifice – celui d'un paradis perdu qui se confond avec l'enfance. 

With her feet in the sand, her head held high and a twinkle in her eye, Aya keeps on proclaiming that she will never leave her birthplace. And yet, the peninsula off the Ivory Coast where she lives with her mother and her younger brother is being slowly eaten away by the ocean, pushing its inhabitants to migrate towards the capital city. 

This fictional movie was shot in a documentary style and, thanks to its magnificent photography and its sensory editing, it is able to make us literally feel the sand, the salt and the intoxicating presence of the sea – the sea in which dreams and reality, the visible and the invisible, all dissolve into each other. Its great strength is that, in order to make us discover a territory that is slowly disappearing, the film's focus is centered around its female protagonist's brisk and carefree pace, her lighthearted stubbornness, her incredible, childlike and radiant energy. By night, Aya explores the peninsula as if in a dream, in a chiaroscuro haunted by ghosts. Not only is the movie the chronicle of a simple and happy life, it is also the story of an individual who gets torn away from her birthplace. And it reminds us that all exiles start off with a sacrifice: the sacrifice of a lost paradise, the sacrifice of childhood.
