Fotogenico ressemble à un graffiti cinématographique. Une caméra libre, qui se glisse dans les anfractuosités de la cité : terrains vagues, boîtes interlopes et plages populaires, Marseille n'avait jamais été filmée comme ça. Avec leur cadres improbables, leur montage elliptique aux faux raccords réjouissants, Marcia Romano et Benoît Sabatier jettent un pavé dans la mare naturaliste du cinéma français contemporain. Ce pavé a un nom (et une moustache) : c'est Christophe Paou. Le film est un écrin foutraque à son talent trop peu exploité qui sait se tenir sur le fil du grotesque sans y sacrifier jamais son personnage. Les cinéastes ont inventé pour lui un quinqua qui, du fond de son chagrin, a l'intuition que la lumière viendra d'une jeunesse plus ou moins paumée, qui gagne sa vie comme elle peut, performe le genre comme elle veut et aime quand elle en a le temps. Face à cette vitalité, on salue ce cinéma décomplexé dont on a vivement besoin. « Vive le graffiti, vive le cinéma, vive le rock, vive la vie !»

Fotogenico is a film graffiti. A free camera slips into the city nooks: wastelands, shady nightclubs and popular beaches, Marseille has rarely been filmed like this before. With their surprising sense of framing and their elliptical editing, Marcia Romano and Benoît Sabatier make waves in the naturalistic ocean of contemporary French cinema. The main wave has a name (and a mustache): Christophe Paou. The film is an eccentric showcase for his under-used talent, constantly on the verge of the grotesque without ever sacrificing his character. The filmmakers came up with a tailor-made part for him, a middle-aged man. From the depths of his grief, has the intuition that the light will come from lost youngsters, earning their living the best they can, performing genders the way they want and loving whenever they're able to. With its striking vitality, this unabashed and much-needed cinema deserves our recognition. «Long live graffiti, long live cinema, long live rock music, long live life!»
