Nighttime. A man lights up a cigarette, then he sets it down and starts singing. He dances down a flight of stairs. The woman he loves is sitting near a fountain. He gets closer to her but she doesn't see him. Only the two lovers' reflections in the water are able to exchange a glance. But soon the water gets cloudy and now the man is alone, sitting exactly where the woman used to be. He then finishes his song, which has led him to a windowsill, at dawn. The music stops. The camera focuses on a cigarette that is barely consumed. It's nighttime. In this world, time and movements in space only comply with the rules of dreams.

La mer et ses vagues is a movie that unfolds like a dream. Its story takes place in Beirut. The man has a scar that still bleeds. He is waiting for a message which promises a departure for a faraway future in the company of his young girlfriend, in the shadow of a hallucinated star which ignites the whole movie. In this darkness, pools of light showcase Beirut's disquieting vibration, with its accumulation of modern, almost sickly-looking skyscrapers. The sea and its waves comes from a country on the brink of the abyss. It is a movie which embraces this state of things. Not in a literal way, but by offering us a network of poetical and political images and signs.
