Sous le soleil de Sicile, Oscar récupère de la ferraille avec son père. A l’autre bout de la ville, Stanley le Nigérian vivote grâce aux petits travaux donnés par le prêtre de la paroisse. Tous deux ont le même désir, celui d’une vie meilleure…

Under the Sicilian sunlight, Oscar collects scrap metal with his father. At the other end of town, Stanley the Nigerian migrant gets by thanks to small tasks given by the parish priest. Both share the same desire for a better life…

Similarly destined for the spotlight is Italian documentary-maker Michele Pennetta with Il mio corpo, a Swiss-Italian production recently unveiled (and well-received) at the Visions du Réel Festival and the second full-length documentary by the Varese-born director, after Fishing Bodies (screened in Locarno's Filmmakers of the Present 2013 line-up).

Pennetta's graceful, 80-minute third film, selected as part of Cannes' ACID selection, feels like a culmination in more ways than just length, as it also finds his aesthetic philosophy at its most refined. The quietness of the approach — it is unusual to come across a documentary of even the most rigorously observational kind, in which the “voice” of its maker is so reverently hushed — coupled to the atmospheric lyricism that infuses Paolo Ferrari's wonderful cinematography, creates a potent, sometimes transcendent whole that continues settling on you and expanding within you long after the film ends.
